Originally from South Australia where he developed his game with Norwood, David Palm took a circuitous route to the VFL via Western Australia. After transferring to Perth for his banking career and turning out for West Perth, he was identified by Richmond scouts and selected with pick 11 in the 1982 interstate draft. Arriving at Punt Road during a turbulent transition period following the Tigers' 1982 Grand Final loss, he made an immediate impact as a mature recruit, playing every game in his debut season.

A rugged and versatile utility who could operate as a ruck-rover, wingman, or back-pocket, Palm was known for his straight-line attack on the football and reliable distribution. While often deployed in defensive roles to shore up a struggling backline, he possessed genuine offensive capability, most notably booting five goals against Essendon at the MCG in 1985. He remained a consistent contributor for Richmond throughout the mid-1980s before departing for the VFA and eventually returning to West Perth, where he cemented his legacy by winning a Best and Fairest and captaining the club.
