Bio
David Parkin progressed through Hawthorn's junior ranks to become one of the most influential figures in the club's history. A tough, uncompromising back pocket who relied on supreme fitness and determination rather than natural flair, Parkin was tasked with shutting down the league's most dangerous small forwards. His playing style was defined by fearlessness and an intense will to win, traits that saw him elevated to the captaincy in 1969. He was a physical defender who set high standards for his teammates, embodying the hard-nosed culture Hawthorn developed during the era.
The pinnacle of his on-field career arrived in 1971, where he captained the Hawks to a premiership victory over St Kilda and won the club best and fairest in the same season. Although he finished his VFL playing days at Hawthorn in 1974 to pursue captain-coaching opportunities in the WAFL, his standing at Glenferrie remains immense. While famously known later as "The Supercoach" for his management of premiership sides at Hawthorn and Carlton, his 211 games as a player established the foundation of professionalism, leadership, and intellectual rigour that defined his lifetime contribution to Australian football.
