Recruited from Sunbury with pick 44 in the 1989 National Draft, David Schwarz established himself as a commanding centre half-forward for Melbourne in the early 1990s. Known universally as "The Ox" due to his brute strength and physical presence, he enjoyed a breakout season in 1994, winning the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal and delivering a dominant finals performance against Carlton that marked him as one of the competition's elite talents. However, his career was severely impacted shortly after when he underwent three knee reconstructions in rapid succession, stripping him of the explosive athleticism that had defined his early game.

Despite these setbacks, Schwarz successfully returned to senior football by reinventing his playstyle, transitioning from a roaming athletic beast into a smart, strong-bodied key forward who used his size to control the air in the goalsquare. He remained a spiritual leader for the Demons, playing a crucial role in the club's run to the 2000 Grand Final. He eventually retired in 2002 as a one-club player, remembered by the Melbourne faithful as a player who maximized his output despite his prime years being compromised by injury.
