A promising junior recruited from Pascoe Vale, David Starbuck arrived at Windy Hill with significant pedigree, finishing runner-up in the 1968 Morrish Medal and featuring in the club's reserves premiership side that same year. The wingman broke into the senior lineup midway through the 1970 season, offering outside run and link-up play, but found it difficult to command a regular position in the starting 18 over the subsequent two years. He managed 13 senior appearances in total, with his most notable statistical impact coming in his final VFL match against Fitzroy in 1971, where he booted the only two goals of his career. Following his time at Essendon, Starbuck moved to the VFA with Coburg before eventually returning to local football with Pascoe Vale and Reservoir-Lakeside.
