Stats
Bio
Recruited from the Victorian Amateur Football Association side Commonwealth Bank, David Sykes was a towering utility who provided much-needed height for the Lions during the 1960s. Standing 191cm, he was capable of playing as a key forward, ruckman, or defender, most famously holding down centre half-back during Fitzroy's legendary 1963 "Miracle Match" upset over Geelong. Despite his promise, Sykes stepped away from the VFL in his prime to pursue opportunities in country football, winning a Morris Medal with North Albury in the Ovens & Murray League and serving as captain-coach for Cobden in the Hampden League. He returned to Brunswick Street for a second stint in 1967, adding valuable experience to the squad before finishing his VFL career with 34 games to his name.
