Recruited from Rochester in the Goulburn Valley, David Williams was a dangerous forward capable of turning a match with his sharp shooting and strong overhead marking. He overcame early injury setbacks to become a key avenue to goal during Melbourne's resurgence under John Northey in the late 1980s, highlighted by a dominant nine-goal haul against North Melbourne in 1986. Williams was a regular fixture in the Demons' 1987 and 1988 finals campaigns, notably kicking two of his side's six goals in the 1988 Grand Final defeat to Hawthorn. His exit from Melbourne was controversial; the Demons removed him from their list with the intention of redrafting him, only for Richmond to swoop in the 1990 Pre-Season Draft. Despite the change of scenery, recurring knee injuries prevented Williams from playing a senior game for the Tigers, and he eventually returned to the country to become a legendary coach in the Goulburn Valley league.
