Recruited from Henty in the Hume Football League, David Willis was a towering ruckman who stood an imposing 203cm, a massive height for the era that gave the Swans a distinct advantage at stoppages. He broke into the senior side late in his debut season and appeared set for a long tenure in the middle, holding his spot for the first 13 rounds of the following year before fitness issues intervened. Unfortunately, his career became a story of unfulfilled potential due to severe body blows; after a persistent groin injury ruined his 1990 campaign, he managed just one final senior game in 1991. Any hopes of a resurgence were extinguished the following year when Willis broke a bone in his neck, a frightening injury that forced the promising big man into premature retirement at just 24 years of age.
