Bio
Recruited from the Eastern Ranges with pick 8 in the 1995 National Draft, David Wirrpanda entered the AFL as a prodigy, joining the West Coast list at just 16 years of age. While his initial seasons were hampered by persistent soft-tissue injuries, he eventually matured into one of the competition's premier small defenders. Wirrpanda was renowned for his poise, exceptional dual-sided disposal, and ability to read the play, often functioning as a calm counterpoint to the Eagles' high-intensity midfield. Rather than relying on physical intimidation, he utilized elite spatial awareness to intercept possession and launch counter-attacks from the half-back flank with clinical efficiency.
Wirrpanda's career reached its zenith during West Coast's formidable run in the mid-2000s. He earned All-Australian selection in 2005 and was a crucial component of the defensive unit during the club's 2006 premiership campaign. A highly respected figure within the playing group, particularly as a mentor for Indigenous teammates, he remained a consistent performer until his retirement in 2009. He departed the game as a West Coast Life Member and was later named in the club's 25th Anniversary Team, remembered as much for his leadership and character as for his silky skills in the backline.
