Drafted by Geelong with pick 34 in the 2007 National Draft from the Murray Bushrangers, Dawson Simpson was a colossal ruckman whose career was defined as much by his imposing physical dimensions as his persistent battle with injury. Standing at 210cm, he offered a rare height advantage and genuine tap dominance at stoppages, yet he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the Cats' senior side due to recurring back issues and the presence of more mobile ruck options like Brad Ottens and Mark Blicavs. After managing just 28 games in eight seasons at Kardinia Park, Simpson joined Greater Western Sydney as a free agent ahead of the 2016 season to provide experienced depth behind Shane Mumford. While his lack of ground-level mobility sometimes exposed him in the modern, fast-paced game, he proved to be a serviceable backup and a highly popular clubman at the Giants, ultimately retiring in 2019 after squeezing a 12-year career out of a fragile body.
