A mammoth ruckman standing at a towering 206cm, Dean Farnham was a mature-age recruit who crossed the border from the SANFL to bolster Fitzroy’s follower stocks in the mid-1970s. Having already established himself as a stalwart for Central District and represented South Australia, he arrived at the Lions in 1974 and immediately slotted into the senior side, using his massive 115kg frame to physically impose himself on contests and protect his midfielders. He was a regular fixture during his debut season, playing 15 games, but found opportunities scarce the following year and added just two more appearances in 1975 before his brief tenure at the Lions concluded. Although his VFL career was short-lived, Farnham remains notable as one of the undisputed giants of his era, possessing a physical profile that dwarfed almost all of his contemporaries at the Junction Oval.
