Bio
A towering ruckman recruited from South Fremantle, Dean Irving entered the AFL as a mature-age draftee and quickly became a key structural component of the early West Coast Eagles lineup. Standing 200cm, he enjoyed a career-best season in 1991, playing 25 games and featuring in the club’s historic Grand Final appearance against Hawthorn. However, his momentum was stalled by knee injuries and the recruitment of Paul Harding, which saw Irving slip down the pecking order and manage just two senior appearances over the next two years. Delisted by the Eagles, he was thrown a lifeline by Melbourne in the 1994 pre-season draft but struggled to recapture his best form in Victoria. Plagued by further injuries and inconsistent form, Irving served primarily as a depth player for the Demons, spending significant time in the reserves before retiring midway through the 1997 season.
