Recruited from Subiaco via the Kalgoorlie goldfields, Dean Kemp stands as one of the greatest recruiting bargains in VFL/AFL history after being selected with pick 117 in the 1989 National Draft. While he lacked the raw pace of some contemporaries, the sheer class and composure of the midfielder allowed him to navigate heavy traffic with ease, often relying on elite evasion and precise distribution to set up play from the centre. He quickly became the linchpin of the Eagles' formidable engine room during their golden era, playing a crucial role in the 1992 premiership before delivering a virtuoso performance in the 1994 Grand Final against Geelong to win the Norm Smith Medal.

Kemp's consistency was rewarded with All-Australian selection and the Club Champion award in 1992, and he remained a key figure at West Coast for over a decade. He assumed the co-captaincy alongside Ben Cousins in 2001, providing veteran leadership to a transitioning list. However, his career was brought to a premature end following the 2001 season due to the cumulative effect of concussion injuries. His standing at the club remains absolute, recognised as a member of the West Coast Eagles Team of the 20th Century and an inductee into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
