Recruited from West Perth, Dean Laidley was an inaugural member of the West Coast Eagles squad in 1987, quickly establishing himself as a hard-nosed defender who attacked the contest with fearless determination. Despite being a regular contributor during the club's rise to power, his tenure in the west ended in frustration; a mid-season knee injury cost him a place in the historic 1992 premiership side, and he was subsequently traded to North Melbourne in exchange for the draft pick that secured Drew Banfield.

The move to Arden Street revitalised his career, as his aggressive, rebounding style from the half-back flank perfectly complemented Denis Pagan's disciplined game plan. Laidley became a central figure in the Kangaroos' backline, embodying the ruthless culture of the mid-90s team. His resilience was ultimately rewarded when he played a vital role in North Melbourne's 1996 premiership victory. He retired in 1998 to pursue a career in coaching, which eventually saw him return to the club as senior coach in 2003.
