Bio
Recruited from VFA club Dandenong, Dean Ross was a hulking ruckman who earned a shot at VFL level with St Kilda as a 24-year-old mature-age prospect. Standing 196cm and weighing in at 102kg, he was a massive unit for the era, brought in to add immediate size and strength to the Saints' division in 1979. Ross made two senior appearances in the middle of the season, managing to drift forward to kick a goal, but struggled to match the pace required at the elite level. His brief stint at Moorabbin remains a classic example of the VFA-to-VFL pathway of the 1970s, where dominant state-league heavyweights were trialled to see if their physical dominance could translate to the big stage.
