Bio
A clever medical student recruited from Carlton College, Denby Browning wrote his name into the history books as a member of University’s very first VFL side in 1908. He primarily patrolled the centre, where he combined ball-winning ability with a dangerous eye for the goals, booting 25 majors across his short career—a respectable strike rate for a midfielder of the dead-ball era. He was a mainstay in the Students' lineup during their initial two seasons, helping the amateur club find its footing against hardened professional opposition. However, the rigours of his medical degree ultimately curtailed his on-field tenure; after a brief 1910 campaign, he retired to pursue his career as a doctor, later moving to South Australia and serving as a Major in the Australian Army Medical Corps during World War I.
