Stats
Bio
Recruited from Albury Rovers after winning the local league's best and fairest, Denis Ryan arrived at Fitzroy as a teenage prodigy and made an immediate impression. He started his career deep in attack, topping the club's goalkicking in his debut season, but a strategic move to centre half-back in 1936 transformed him into the competition's premier defender. Renowned for his contested marking and clean hands, Ryan dominated opposition forwards to win the Brownlow Medal in just his second year. His football journey was effectively ended by World War II, where he served in Tobruk and New Guinea, with war wounds and a knee injury preventing a successful VFL return despite a brief attempt in 1946.
