Bio
Recruited from Bundoora, Derek Shaw occupies a unique niche in Magpie history as the "other" Shaw—standing 194cm tall, he was unrelated to the club's famous brotherly dynasty of Ray and Tony. A versatile key forward and relief ruckman known for his strong marking hands, he broke into the senior side as a teenager and notably held his spot for the 1979 Grand Final loss to Carlton. His career followed an unusual trajectory; citing burnout, he engaged in a legal dispute to leave the club in 1980 and moved to the WAFL, where he immediately won a premiership with South Fremantle. Shaw returned to Victoria Park the following season to resume his VFL career, but ultimately struggled to cement a permanent place in the 22 against stiff competition from Brownlow medallist Peter Moore and subsequent recruit David Cloke, departing the club for good after the 1984 season.
