Bio
One of the most decorated underage Gaelic footballers of all time, Dermot McNicholl arrived at St Kilda as a highly touted recruit from County Derry in the midst of the "Irish Experiment." Already an All-Ireland minor winning captain and a GAA All-Star while still a teenager, McNicholl caught the eye of scouts during the International Rules series and was drafted by the Saints with pick 99 in 1988. After a season learning the code with VFA club Prahran, he broke into the St Kilda senior side in 1990, impressing immediately with his pace, power, and balance as a half-forward who could boot a goal on the run. However, his promising start was derailed by a severe groin injury that sidelined him for ten weeks, halting his momentum just as he looked comfortable at the elite level. He returned to Ireland at the end of the season to complete his university studies and never returned to the AFL, eventually helping Derry win the historic 1993 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.
