Bio
Recruited from Eaglehawk in the Bendigo Football League, Des English arrived at Princes Park and quickly established himself as a staple of Carlton's backline during a golden era for the club. Making his debut in 1980, he was a rugged and disciplined back pocket specialist known for his close-checking capability and reliability under pressure. English became an integral component of the Blues' defensive unit, playing a crucial role in the back-to-back premiership triumphs of 1981 and 1982, where his ability to shut down dangerous opposition small forwards allowed teammates like Bruce Doull and Ken Hunter to provide drive from the back half.
While not a prolific ball-winner, English was highly regarded for his concentration and selflessness, rarely lowering his colours in one-on-one contests. He remained a consistent selection throughout the mid-1980s, reaching the 100-game milestone in what would prove to be his final season. His career was brought to a premature and unfortunate end following the 1986 season when he was diagnosed with cancer, forcing his retirement at just 29 to focus on his recovery. English is remembered by the Carlton faithful as a courageous defender who was a quiet achiever in one of the league's most formidable teams.
