Bio
Hailing from the Riverina town of Barellan, Des Lyons was a powerfully built key forward and ruckman who arrived at Princes Park with a burgeoning reputation from Leeton. Although he had briefly trained with Collingwood as a teenager, it was the Blues who secured his services for the 1960 season, where he debuted at centre half-forward in a historic drawn match against Richmond. Despite showing promise with his strong marking hands and booming kick across two senior appearances, the pull of home proved too strong; citing homesickness and the financial security of his family's cartage business, Lyons walked away from the VFL almost as soon as he arrived. He returned to the bush to become a genuine country football legend, eventually piloting Leeton to multiple premierships and winning two Gammage Medals as the league's best and fairest player.
