Recruited from Mulgrave, Des Meagher carved out a distinguished career at Glenferrie Oval as a dashing wingman and half-forward. Breaking into the senior side in 1966, he quickly became renowned for his electrifying pace and significant stamina, attributes that fit perfectly into John Kennedy Snr's disciplined game plan. His ability to carry the ball and finish on the run made him a dangerous offensive weapon, and he became a pivotal figure in the Hawks' ascent during the early 1970s.

Meagher's crowning achievement came in 1971, where he played a crucial role in Hawthorn's premiership victory over St Kilda. A consistent performer who regularly polled well in club champion awards, he provided reliable service on the wing for over a decade. He retired at the conclusion of the 1976 season, finishing his tenure agonisingly short of the 200-game milestone, but remains remembered as a key component of the club's first golden era.
