Family

Recruited from East Melbourne CYMS, Des Negri was a tidy ball-handler who joined his older brother Frank at Collingwood during the Second World War. A product of the prolific CBC Parade football nursery, Negri was a noted schoolboy handball champion, utilizing those skills primarily as a defender and utility across 30 games for the Magpies. He crossed to Richmond in a mid-season transfer in June 1945 but struggled to break into the senior lineup, adding just two games to his tally before a stint in the VFA with Coburg. Negri later relocated to Queensland, where he left a lasting mark as a premiership-winning captain-coach in the mining town of Mount Isa.
