Des O'Dwyer is best remembered as a teenage prodigy whose VFL career was derailed by injury, only to find long-term success as a stalwart of South Australian football. Recruited from Shepparton United, he was thrust into Melbourne’s senior side in 1978 at just 16 years of age—one of the youngest debutants in club history—and famously booted a goal with his first kick against St Kilda. However, a serious knee injury stalled his progress, restricting him to just eight games over five seasons with the Demons. Seeking a fresh start and employment opportunities, O'Dwyer moved to the SANFL, where he initially featured as a forward for Norwood, highlighting his potential with a 10-goal haul against Sturt in 1985. He eventually transferred to Woodville, where he settled as a reliable key defender, playing over 100 games and providing distinguished service to the Warriors prior to their merger into the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles.
