Bio
Recruited from Old Melburnians, Dick Atkinson was a sturdy follower who found himself trying to break into one of the most formidable lineups in VFL history. He made his senior debut in 1955 but his progress was stalled by a collision in just his second match, where he famously played out the game despite suffering two broken ribs. Atkinson struggled to command a regular spot in Norm Smith’s powerhouse Melbourne side, unable to crack the senior team during the dominant 1956 season, though he was a key member of the club's Reserves premiership that year. After managing just four more appearances in 1957, he left the Demons to pursue opportunities as a captain-coach, first with Claremont in the WAFL and later with Brighton in the VFA.
