Bio
Arriving at Essendon from Coburg Juniors, Dick Clough was a Williamstown native whose VFL career was brief but coincided with a competitive era for the club. He managed just two senior appearances spread across two seasons, debuting in a heavy defeat to Carlton in 1907 where the Blues posted a then-record score against the Same Olds. After struggling to cement a spot in the lineup, he returned for a solitary win against Melbourne in 1908 before transferring to North Melbourne in the VFA the following year in search of greater opportunity. Clough’s football journey is largely defined by his tragic service in World War I; after enlisting with the 5th Light Horse Regiment, he died of wounds sustained at Gallipoli in 1915 and was buried at sea, standing as one of the many league footballers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
