Bio
Richard "Chopper" Doran was a seasoned campaigner by the time he lined up for South Melbourne in the inaugural 1897 VFL season. Born in Melbourne, Doran built a formidable reputation across a decade-long VFA career, serving Port Melbourne and South Melbourne with distinction before brief stints with Footscray and WAFL club Fremantle in 1896. A hard-nosed player whose nickname hinted at his physical approach, he returned to the Bloods to help steer them into the new league, bringing vital experience to a side navigating the competition's formation. Though his VFL career was restricted to just nine games without a goal, his contribution as a senior figure during that historic transition year cemented his place in the club’s early lore before he finished his tenure at the elite level aged 29.
