Bio
Recruited from Caulfield Grammar, Dick Gibbs was a talented medical student who balanced his studies with a promising football career at University. The Warracknabeal native established himself as a reliable contributor for the Students between 1912 and 1914, earning a reputation for his clean marking and kicking skills despite his youth. Following University's withdrawal from the VFL prior to the 1915 season, Gibbs was cleared to play for Melbourne, but he never donned the red and blue guernsey, instead enlisting in the AIF to serve in World War I. His football journey was tragically cut short when he was killed in action at Fromelles in 1916, where he was posthumously awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry, cementing his status as one of the league's fallen heroes.
