Bio
A distinguished figure in the transition from the VFA to the VFL, Dick Gibson holds the honour of serving as South Melbourne's inaugural VFL captain. Already a seasoned veteran by the time the breakaway league formed in 1897, Gibson led the Bloods onto the field for their historic first match against Collingwood at Victoria Park. He operated primarily as a follower, using his experience to guide the side through the competition's fledgling years, although his age limited his VFL tenure to just two seasons. While he managed only 29 games at the highest level, Gibson's contribution as a pioneer leader remains a foundational piece of the club's history.
