Bio
Hailing from the wheatbelt town of Goomalling, Dick Jones was a sharp-shooting rover who made a stunning but fleeting impression at South Melbourne after arriving from East Fremantle. He enjoyed a brilliant debut season in 1949, topping the Bloods' goalkicking with 27 majors and serving as acting vice-captain, a rare honour for a new recruit that highlighted his immediate leadership qualities. However, his VFL career was punctuated by a return west in 1950 to captain-coach Boulder City to a Goldfields premiership. Jones resurfaced at the Lake Oval for a distinct two-game cameo in early 1951, but ultimately departed the VFL to pursue a police career and a successful SANFL tenure with Glenelg and West Torrens.
