Bio
Born and bred in Collingwood, Dick Lee became the first true superstar of the Magpies and the most prominent member of a famous footballing family that served the club for decades. Despite standing just 178cm, Lee revolutionised the full-forward position with his phenomenal aerial ability, earning a reputation as a player who could seemingly "hang" in the air to take contested marks over taller opponents. His marking strength was matched by his reliability in front of goal, where he utilised a distinctive place kick to punish opposition defenders for nearly two decades.
Lee's career was defined by his dominance near the goalface, topping the VFL's goalkicking table on seven separate occasions and becoming the first player in league history to kick 500 career goals. A pivotal figure in the premiership triumphs of 1910, 1917, and 1919, he achieved these feats despite chronic knee issues that forced him to play with heavy bandaging and eventually necessitated his retirement in 1922. He departed the game as the VFL's all-time leading goalkicker with 707 majors, a record that stood for over a decade until broken by his successor at full-forward, Gordon Coventry.
