Bio
Recruited from the Essendon 'A' side, Dick Maynard was a determined defender whose path to the VFL was shaped by significant service in World War I rather than a traditional junior pathway. Having served in France as a gunner and driver with the 33rd Howitzer Brigade, he overcame a life-threatening bout of pneumonia overseas before returning to Australia in 1919 to pursue top-level football. Standing just 173cm, Maynard was an undersized full-back who relied on grit and application to hold his spot in a strong Bombers lineup that would eventually reach the Grand Final that year. Although his senior career was restricted to just seven games in the 1921 season, he holds a distinct place in club history for playing in Essendon’s final ever home match at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground before the club's permanent relocation to Windy Hill.
