Bio
A prodigious country talent recruited from Lake Boga, Dick O’Bree was a powerfully built full-forward who Collingwood spent years trying to lure permanently to Victoria Park. His reluctance to leave the family farm made him an elusive prospect, but when he finally committed in 1956, he immediately displayed the strong marking and long kicking that had seen him boot massive tallies in regional leagues. His VFL career was cruelly cut short in just his third game, however, when he suffered a horrific broken leg in a collision with Richmond’s Col Saddington. Although he managed a lone comeback game the following season, O’Bree eventually returned to the bush where he cemented his status as a genuine legend of country football, kicking over 1200 career goals and coaching Euroa to seven premierships.
