A gifted all-round athlete from Nagambie, Dick Welch represented Victoria in the prestigious King's Cup for rowing before making his mark in the VFL. He was recruited to Essendon in 1936 and operated primarily as a defender, utilising the strength and endurance honed on the water to compete at the senior level. While he featured regularly during his first two campaigns, Welch struggled to cement a permanent spot in the Bombers' lineup in 1938, managing just a solitary senior game while spending the bulk of the season in the seconds. He was eventually omitted from the senior list and crossed to Coburg in the VFA for the 1939 season, before his sporting career was effectively curtailed by his service as a Lieutenant in the Second World War.
