Recruited from Caulfield Grammarians, Dick Wicks arrived at the Junction Oval with a reputation for blistering speed, having previously been a finalist in the prestigious Stawell Gift. He made an immediate impression as a pacey wingman and rover, most notably soaring for a pack mark to kick the match-winning goal against Collingwood in his debut season—a year that saw him honoured as St Kilda's best first-year player. His VFL career was surprisingly brief, however, ending after just three seasons amidst a protracted and controversial clearance dispute with Melbourne that eventually saw him exit to VFA club Moorabbin without adding to his game tally. While his football contributions were fleeting, his name became a household staple decades later as the founder of a successful magnetic therapy brand, a business venture inspired by the injuries he sustained during his sporting life.
