Bio
Recruited from Gold Street State School in the heart of the Magpies' territory, Don Balfour was a local product with a deep connection to the club as the nephew of inaugural Collingwood veteran Bill Balfour. He found himself immediately thrust into the heat of finals football, playing as a defender in losing Grand Final sides in both his first and second seasons (1938 and 1939). His promising start was interrupted by the Second World War, which saw him miss the entire 1942 season and restricted his output for several years. In a rare mid-season switch during 1945, Balfour crossed to Richmond to play out the final handful of games in his VFL career. He later cemented his footballing reputation in Tasmania, where he captain-coached Launceston club City to a Grand Final appearance in 1947.
