Bio
A local product from Chilwell, Don Bauer's VFL career began under unusual circumstances at Footscray in 1943, necessitated because his home club Geelong was in recess during the Second World War. After serving with the Royal Australian Air Force, he finally joined the Cats midway through the 1945 season and quickly established himself as a mainstay in the defensive 50. A reliable backman who rarely troubled the scorers, Bauer provided stability during Geelong's post-war rebuilding phase before departing the league at just 27 years of age. He left Victoria to accept a captain-coaching role with City in the Northern Tasmanian Football Association, eventually returning to the mainland to coach Geelong West in the Ballarat League.
