Bio
Hailing from the Latrobe Valley town of Yallourn, Don Benson was a diminutive footballer who earned a brief VFL opportunity with Richmond during the final stages of the Second World War. Already a premiership player with Yallourn in the Central Gippsland league, the 25-year-old was brought into the Tigers' fold in 1945 to bolster a squad managing the availability fluctuations typical of the era. Standing just 170cm, Benson managed three senior games in the yellow and black but could not cement a permanent spot in a strong lineup that went on to contest that year's Grand Final. His top-level career was fleeting, yet he remained a notable figure in later years as one of the club's longest-lived former players, passing away in 2019 at the age of 99.
