Bio
Recruited from the Lincoln Stars in the local Essendon district competition, Carmichael was a utility primarily deployed as a half-back who found it difficult to cement a permanent place in the senior side during the mid-1950s. While his top-level opportunities were limited to 15 games over three seasons, he was a dominant force in the seconds, winning Essendon’s reserves Best and Fairest in 1955 and earning selection for the Victorian state reserves team. After leaving Windy Hill and a brief stint with St Kilda's reserves, he forged a successful VFA career with Williamstown, where he played 90 games and featured in the 1961 and 1964 Grand Finals before eventually moving to Gippsland to play for and select for Sale.
