Bio
Best remembered as the founder of the Australian Democrats rather than for his on-field exploits, Don Chipp's brief foray into VFL football occurred immediately following his service in the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War. Recruited from Heidelberg, he broke into the Fitzroy lineup late in the 1947 season, utilising his background as a professional sprinter to compete at the senior level. He managed to kick a goal in his debut against North Melbourne, but his career was limited to just three games before he moved on to local football and eventually a high-profile political career. While his tenure at the Brunswick Street Oval was fleeting, he remains one of the few federal ministers to have played at the highest level of Australian Rules football.
