Bio
Recruited from the University Blacks in the amateur competition, Don Hewson was a war-time defender who stepped up to fill a void for Melbourne during the tumultuous World War II era. A former Scotch College student, he joined the Demons at age 22 and immediately found a place in the back pocket, offering defensive cover while the club's list was depleted by military enlistments. He played his football exclusively during the lean war years of 1942 to 1944, featuring regularly in his first two seasons before drifting out of the league after a final appearance in 1944. While his VFL career was brief, his service helped keep the club competitive during a period of significant instability, and he remained a staunch supporter until his passing at age 97.
