Recruited from Portland as a promising centreman, "Red Nut" Howell was a ginger-haired utility who made an immediate impact at St Kilda. He earned the club's Best Promoted Player award in his debut season and appeared to be a regular fixture in the side, only to be surprisingly delisted in early 1956 despite having played 16 games the previous year. Crossing to Collingwood, he spent an entire season dominating in the reserves before finally breaking into the senior lineup as a wingman and half-forward. Howell played nine games during the Magpies' famous 1958 premiership campaign but missed selection for the finals series, ultimately finishing his VFL career without a flag. He later returned to St Kilda as a key administrator, serving as Director of Finance during the Lindsay Fox era to help stabilise the club off the field.
