Bio
Standing at 191cm, Don Mattson was a strongly built utility who took a circuitous route to the VFL, progressing from Chiltern and Albury in the country leagues to Yarraville in the VFA. After a fleeting single-game stint with North Melbourne's reserves, he was traded to Richmond in 1976 in exchange for Bill Nettlefold. Mattson managed seven senior games for the Tigers as a half-back and ruck-rover, but his tenure at Punt Road was short-lived. He crossed to Essendon for the 1977 season, where he etched his name into a unique slice of football trivia: his solitary senior appearance for the Bombers came against his former side, Richmond, in a famous drawn match at Waverley Park best remembered for the debut of 15-year-old Tim Watson. Mattson eventually moved to Sydney to captain-coach Newtown, representing New South Wales in 1978 before a leg injury forced his premature retirement.
