Stats
Bio
Hailing from the New Town Football Club in Tasmania, Don McVilly arrived at Hawthorn in 1945 after serving in the Merchant Navy during World War II. Standing just 174cm, he was a compact and strongly built utility who could rotate through the midfield or lock down in defence. While his VFL career was relatively brief, McVilly was a consistent contributor during the club's immediate post-war years, notably lowering the colours of North Melbourne superstar Les Foote during a memorable performance in 1945. After three seasons and 42 games in the brown and gold, he returned to the Apple Isle to continue his career with Hobart in the TFL, where he eventually served as a premiership-winning reserves coach.
