Bio
A Melbourne native who originally played in the Hawthorn fourths, Don Roach rose to prominence in the SANFL with West Adelaide, earning All-Australian selection and a premiership medallion in 1961 before returning to Victoria. Joining the Hawks' senior list in 1964, he was a classy, left-footed flanker and follower known for his balance and skill. He proved to be a durable contributor at Glenferrie Oval, playing every match of the 1965 season despite the club's struggles near the bottom of the ladder. Roach departed the VFL to captain-coach West Adelaide in 1966, eventually transitioning into a celebrated administrative career where he pioneered the "modified rules" concept that laid the foundation for modern junior development programs like Auskick.
