Bio
Recruited from VFA club Brighton, Cyril "Dooley" Lilburne was a decorated all-round sportsman whose VFL career was defined by elite versatility and leadership during a heartbreaking era for the Tigers. A product of Wesley College, where he excelled in rowing and cricket, Lilburne adapted quickly to the top level, utilised by Richmond as a centreman, ruck-rover, and flanker who could impact the contest all over the ground. He became a fixture of the senior side during the club's formidable late-20s period, playing in the consecutive Grand Final defeats of 1927, 1928, and 1929. His standing among his peers was such that he was appointed club captain for the 1929 season and selected to represent Victoria, yet he made the decision to leave the VFL at the peak of his powers. After just four seasons and 74 games, he returned to Brighton as captain-coach, closing the book on a short but distinguished VFL tenure.
