Bio
Recruited from East Wagga, Doug Barwick commenced his VFL career with Fitzroy in 1984, where he quickly established himself as a crafty rover and small forward capable of heavy scoring. Over four seasons with the Lions, he proved to be a consistent contributor, but his profile rose significantly after he transferred to Collingwood ahead of the 1988 season. The move provided the Magpies with a dangerous avenue to goal, as Barwick utilised his pace and football nous to crumble packs and capitalise on loose balls inside the forward 50.
Barwick's legacy is inextricably linked to the 1990 season, where he played a vital role in breaking Collingwood's 32-year premiership drought. He enjoyed a superb post-season campaign that year, booting crucial goals throughout the finals series and featuring prominently in the historic Grand Final victory over Essendon. He retired at the conclusion of the 1991 season, remaining a revered figure at Victoria Park as a premiership player who delivered his best football when the stakes were highest.
