Bio
A diminutive rover and forward pocket from the Geelong District, Doug Brown commenced his VFL career with Fitzroy in 1943 solely because the Cats were in recess during the Second World War. He returned to his local club when they rejoined the league in 1944, though his progress was soon interrupted by service with the RAAF that cost him the entire 1945 season. Upon his return, Brown established himself as a consistent goal-kicker, using his 168cm frame to crumb effectively and resting forward with great success to average well over a goal a game. He remained a dangerous attacking option for Geelong throughout the late 1940s before leaving the VFL at age 27 to accept a captain-coaching role with Tatura in the Goulburn Valley, a common path for talented players seeking better financial remuneration in that era.
