Bio
Recruited from Dromana after winning a kicking contest on the Mornington Peninsula, Doug Chapman was a towering figure who joined Richmond during the club’s inaugural VFL season in 1908. Standing at 191cm—a giant stature for the era—he operated primarily as a ruckman and centre half-forward, using his significant reach to influence aerial contests. After two seasons at Punt Road, Chapman transferred to the VFA, where he became a key player for Essendon Association (the "Dreadnoughts"), anchoring their back-to-back premiership sides in 1911 and 1912. He returned to the VFL with Melbourne in 1913 following a contentious clearance regarding his residential qualifications, but his second stint at the top level was brief, yielding ten games before he eventually finished his career back in the Association with Hawthorn.
