Bio
A product of Doutta Stars and Redan, Doug Dench was a patient defender who served a lengthy apprenticeship in the seconds before finally earning his senior debut. A stalwart of the club's lower grades, he played in the 1950 reserves premiership and won the reserves Best and Fairest in 1954, persistence that was eventually rewarded when he broke into the senior lineup at the mature age of 25. Dench operated primarily across the half-back line and back pocket, providing steady defensive coverage across two seasons without ever drifting forward to kick a goal. After a brief but hard-earned stint at the top level, he was cleared to VFA club Williamstown following the 1956 season.
