Recruited from Cohuna in country Victoria, Doug Farrant arrived at North Melbourne to join his brother Gary and immediately established himself as a potent focal point in attack. A powerfully built full-forward capable of crashing packs and converting opportunities, he topped the club’s goalkicking in his debut 1968 season—a rare feat for a first-year player. He remained a consistent contributor inside 50 for six years, using his 189cm frame to advantage during an era when the Roos were slowly building toward contention. However, his time at Arden Street ended in a move that reshaped the club's future; following the 1973 season, Farrant was transferred to WAFL side Perth as a key component of the high-stakes trade deal that delivered superstar rover Barry Cable to North Melbourne.
